چکیده

Ten of the most abundant sponge species from the northern Red Sea were studied. Six of them are new species that are described here: Callyspongia paralia, Hemimycale arabica, Rhabderemia batatas, Niphates rowi, Petrosia elephantotus, and Topsentia aqabaensis. An additional species has been reassigned and renamed: Dactylochalina viridis Keller, 1889 was assigned to Amphimedon and renamed A. chloros to avoid homonymy with A. viridis Duch. & Mich. Callyspongia paralia and N. rowi were found restricted to shallow water (<4 m), whereas the other species were also detected in deeper water. The reproduction of most of these new species as well as of Theonella swinhoei Gray, 1868, and Theonella conica (Kieschnick, 1896) was determined based on histological examination of their reproductive elements (oocytes, embryos and larvae). Theonella swinhoei, T. conica and T. aqabaensis were shown to be oviparous, whereas H. arabica, A. chloros, and Siphonochalina siphonella are viviparous, as is also known for N. rowi and C. paralia.

The first report of two monogenean gill parasites assigned to Diclidophora merlangi (Diclidophoridae) and Loxuroides pricei ‎‎(Axinidae) from brushtooth lizardfish and red porgy seabream of ‎the Red Sea, Egypt

Monogenea is one of the most species-rich groups of parasitic flatworms worldwide with many species described from African freshwater fish. Little is known about the diversity and geographic distribution of monogenean parasites infesting the Red Sea fishes in Egypt. In the present study, a total of 45 specimens of the brushtooth lizardfish Saurida undosquamis (family: Synodontidae) and...

Nitrogen and phosphorous budgets for integrated culture of Litopenaeus vannamei with red sea algae Gracilaria corticata under zero water exchange system

Abstract In this study, a 2×3 factorial design  with two levels of  shrimp density (25 and 50 shrimp per m-2) and three  levels of   red algae density (0, 200 and 400g per m-2) was applied to calculate  nitrogen and phosphorous budgets in integrated culture of Litopenaeus vannamei with Gracilaria corticata  during 45 days under zero water exchange system. Juvenile of L.vannamei (5.82 ± 0.11 g...

An investigation on age, growth and biological characteristics of red mullet (Mullus barbatus ponticus, Essipov, 1927) in the Eastern Black Sea

This study was carried out during May 2010 – April 2011 in order to determine various biological properties of red mullet occurring in the Eastern Black Sea region. The average length and weight of 1435 specimens were determined as 13.13 cm and 23.14 g, respectively. Weight-length relationship was determined as W = 0.0088 L3.0338. The age distribution of this population ranged between I and VII...

Stocks status of kilka in Iranian waters of the Caspian Sea

The present study considered the situation of kilka stocks in last decades by using overfished biomass threshold, fishing effort ratio and fishing mortality proxy during 1991-2010. The CPUE index of anchovy and mixed-species of kilka indicated an undepleted from 1991 to 2000. In 2000, the CPUE ratio declined to close to the “in danger” region, and subsequently collapsed to “overfished” region f...
